What is the VAT ID number?

How do I get a VAT number in Sweden?

As a supplier of goods or services, your company is normally obliged to issue an invoice with VAT to its customer. This is the general rule. However, there are many derogatory situations which transfer this obligation to pay tax to the customer himself. These situations are known as "reverse charge" situations.

The special reverse charge rules have been introduced in Sweden for foreign companies:

Who has a VAT ID?

If you sell digital products to EU consumers, you might be required to register for VAT and apply VAT taxes to all of your EU sales.

Actually, it’s possible to voluntarily register, too, even if you don’t meet the requirements. In our experience working with online businesses from all over the world, we've learned that there are some benefits to registering for VAT which we’ll explore later!

First, let’s better understand VAT and why a VAT number is necessary by answering the question, what is a VAT?

VAT is the abbreviation for “value-added tax,” in the EU and around the world. It’s a consumption tax that’s charged incrementally throughout a product’s path to market, based on the total value added at each stage. In the EU, it’s levied as a destination-based tax, meaning the exact tax rate is based on the location of the buyer.

Do I need a VAT ID?

The VAT Identification number identifies all companies in the European Union and is indispensable for intra-European trade. It can be obtained by registering vor VAT.

When trading within the EU (intra-community supply/service) a VAT ID for making sure that taxes are paid is mandatory. So the VAT ID number is then needed to identify all sellers and buyers (if businesses) and to ensure a smooth handling and payment of VAT and to avoid fraud.

Following a registration for VAT you will need to fulfill regular VAT duties, like the submission of VAT returns and other important documents. Those duties can be automated with the hellotax VAT software. Find out more during a free consultation with our VAT specialists!

In principle, the VAT number consists of a prefix (country code at the beginning) and a suffix (numbers/letters for identification).

How do you qualify for a VAT number?

Value-added tax identification number (VATIN), or simply VAT, is a unique identifier used by the government that links to every taxable person or registered business. A VAT number allows tax authorities in the EU to track the movement of goods and associated tax liabilities on trading businesses.

Businesses require a valid VAT tax number if they move goods to and from the EU. They need to produce their VAT registration number even when applicable VAT is zero-rated – that is, when the goods have no tax liability, such as on intra-EU trades.

Each VAT number is verifiable on the official VIES (VAT information exchange system) website of the European Union.

How much is a VAT number?

To understand how to apply for VAT number online, you must first learn what a VAT is. VAT stands for Value Added Tax, and is a graduated tax system which is used in the European Union's 27 countries, as well as the Isle of Man and Monaco.

Businesses are required to add the VAT to the price of most products and services that are sold. This includes business-to-business sales, as well as business-to-consumer sales. It is also required for the VAT to be added to many non-sales items, including commission from sales, merchandise samples, and vending machine items.

What is the difference between VAT number and ID number?

A VAT is a tax on consumable goods and services bought and sold within the European Union.

A Tax Identification Number is used by the IRS in the United States and other tax agencies in the EU for the purpose of taxing individuals and entities according to their respective tax laws.

    What does VAT stand for?

Value-added tax (VAT) is the international alternative to U.S. sales tax and is applied to the sale of goods and services in over 160 countries.

However, VAT tax is more complex than simple sales tax. Take a closer look at how value tax works.

Do I need an EU VAT number?

A specific “EU VAT number” doesn’t exist per se. VAT stands for Value Added Tax (as it’s called in the UK) and is a consumption tax charged on items at the point of sale. All 27 Member States apply VAT in their own way and have their own names for consumption tax. For example, in France it is TVA and in Spain it is IVA. Depending on your circumstances you may need to register locally in each country.

While an EU-wide “EU VAT number” doesn’t exist, the One Stop Shop (OSS) and Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) schemes act a little like an “EU VAT number”. Through these schemes, you can report all your eligible intra-EU (OSS) or imported EU (IOSS) sales via a single electronic return.

To check your own VAT number or the VAT number of another business, you can use VIES. VIES is a tool developed by the European Commission to confirm the validity of VAT numbers across the EU.

You may need to check a VAT number is valid to ensure you’re compliant when completing your returns. There is a separate tool to check UK VAT numbers.
